Pity any fool who picks Penn State.

I think Texas and Oklahoma are down this year. I read an interesting inside view of Texas football and Mack Brown written by Pat Forde. It was pretyy insightful, on ESPN.com.

I went to a basketball coaches clinic this weekend and the new coach of the Toledo Rockets said something I will take to the bank. He addressed the coaches paraphrasing, "if you ever get fired, make it be for losing. There is no shame in that and nothing to hang your head about. Don't make them fire you for any other reason like bad behavior."

Ron Zook comes to mind, as does Charlie Weis.

Stanford had an impressive win vs. Notre Dame. I never envisioned Brian Kelley struggling.

Buckeye Cock is going to be an uncle again! Woo Hoo!! They're thinking about naming her Cecilia. The verdict is still out on the name. Anyways . . .

    1. Ohio State - I like the Illini for our first road game. I'm not concerned but it gives us a good taste of what's to come.

    2. Alabama - They should have lost last week but managed to pull it out. I wouldn't be surprised if they pull a Texas and lose this week but the running game will keep them in it.

    3. Oregon - Could we see a Ducks vs Bucks rematch for the national championship? Highly unlikely buy you never know. It's tough to win at Autzen (sp) stadium.

    4. Oklahoma - Speaking of Texas, how about that big egg last week. I picked against OK before and lost, not this time.

    5. Michigan State - I think Wisconsin is overrated. Dantonio, coming off a heart attack (as if it were a casual injury) will be in the coach's box. Does that mean he'll be watching the game? The gurney will be on call.

    6. Iowa - Too much pink is bad for your eyes and will easily confuse a Nittany Lion. Good slate of Big Ten games for opening weekend.

    7. Bowling Green - I have to stick with the Ohio MAC team.

OSU maintains possession of the Illibuck trophy for yet another year. Supposedly this Illini team matches up talent wise (with emphasis on supposedly) but I’ll take Tressel over Zook any day.

Alabama rolls over Florida – Really should be a bigger game than billed. I’d say the SEC is more top-heavy this season than any time in recent history.

Oregon sucker-punches Stanford – Sorry Cardinals…Ducks are larger and probably taste better when served on rice.

Texas gores Oklahoma – So here’s my minor upset pick of the weekend. Longhorns coming off a huge loss. Oklahoma cruising through their season thusfar. If it means I go 5-1 then so be it.

Wisconsin spears Michigan State - a true Pickem game if you consult Vegas. Hopefully since we don’t play MSU this season they suck more than the teams we do play…make sense??

Iowa cornholes Penn State – PSU freshman starting QB = sad times in State College…still think Joe Pa crapping his pants is anecdotally relevant

Bowling Green wings Buffalo – Having JUST been at the Wendy’s in front of Buffalo’s campus a few weekends ago, both myself and Carl, consider ourselves first rate experts on the goings-on with the Buffalo football team. That said, I still sent out for my weekly engraved odd-ball game coin.

  6. Old Baggage:

    1) I don't care how close Illinois has played us in the past, OSU is going to win easy on Saturday.

    2) Not the same game as last year. Alabama wins.

    3) Not sure where all the hype is coming from for Stanford. Oregon wins.

    4) Once again, not the same game it was last year. Oklahoma wins.

    5) Welcome back Dantonio... but Wisconsin wins.

    6) My wife is a Falcon alum so by the powers vested in her I have to pick BGSU.

  7. Carl's Stone Cold Lead Pipe Locks of the Century (of the Week) for Week #5:

Let it be known throughout the land that Carl is once again flying high on the strength of his 6-0 record in Week #4! Cock, Head, and 'Man, watch out, Carl is comin' for ya!!!

OSU def. Illinois: According to Mr. Moderator's information about the game, this game/trophy presentation (the Illibuck) once involved the smoking of a peace pipe (why that was ever discontinued, I'll never know). That's one tradition that Carl can get behind!

Alabama def. Florida: If a pretty boy Jesus freak QB graduates from college, does anyone still stop hating the Gators?!?! H*LL NO!!!!

Oregon def. Stanford: Gotta love that Sportscenter commercial with the Oregon mascot looking longingly outside his office window at his duck brethren outside in the pond quacking and enjoying the sunny day while he sits inside, typing away at his computer and sighing.

Oklahoma def. Texas: Both teams are lucky to have the records/rankings that they do. Oklahoma barely beat a bunch of second rate Mormons at home for Pete's sake!!! In top offense vs. top defense matchups, the defense usually wins. Then why is Carl going against the norm?!?! Because Carl is an enigma wrapped in a riddle, that's why!

Wisconsin def. Michigan State: REALLY close matchup, this game could go either way, especially with the Spartans playing with some extra heart (pardon my horrible pun) for Dantonio. Going with the Badgers because MSU is another one of those teams that always starts out well, gets into the top 25, and then when conference play begins, they go 3-5 and end up playing in the Champs Sports Bowl at the end of the season.

Iowa def. Penn State: Iowa = better football team. Penn State = better ice cream. More often than not, ice cream beats football, but not in this specific case.

Bowling Green def. Buffalo: Having been in Buffalo not more than 1 month ago, and having eaten at many fine establishments frequented by UB football players, I (and MK's Hair as well), can both tell you, gentle reader, that the Middle of Nowhere, OH beats up on Western NY every day of the week. See folks, we're not just Guest Panel colleagues, we're friends too. On a side note, Carl finally got his first oddball game victory of the season last week. I think an angel just got its wings.

    1. Ohio State over Illinois - This feels like the game when the Buckeye defense finally gets the shutout they should have had against Marshall or Ohio.
    2. Alabama over Florida - Crisis averted by Alabama, they are now free to crush Florida.
    3. Oregon over Stanford - Both teams have been putting up a lot of points. This could be a shootout.
    4. Texas over Oklahoma - Oklahoma may have the better team this year, but Texas is going to pull it out.
    5. Michigan State over Wisconsin - Is Michigan State for real? It's still September, so we'll give them the benefit of the doubt.
    6. Iowa over Penn State - Penn State is progressing more slowly that I anticipated.
    7. Bowling Green over Buffalo - Buffalo used to really suck, and as far as I know, that is still the case.

  10. Spamsandwichsan says...

    1. W: OSU - 'bout time for some big ten foosball!
    2. W: Alabama - would be a nice upset, but I think they had a wake up call last week
    3. W: Oregon - their fans were the biggest and loudest idiots at the rose bowl... They deserve to loose but will probably have the crowd support to win, as long as TV time outs don't kill momentum (like osu vs sc in the shoe last year)!
    4. W: Oklahoma
    5. W: Wisconsin
    6. W: Iowa
    7. W: Bowling Green

  12. Pat Head’s Picks:

    1. OSU over Illinois: Ahh this game will always hold a special place in my heart!

    2. Alabama over Florida: I still think Florida sucks. But this could be a good game.

    3. Oregon over Stanford: I am not confident in this pick, but since Oregon will be playing at home, I will pick Oregon.

    4. Oklahoma over Texas: I think this may be a rebuilding year for Texas.

    5. Michigan State over Wisconsin: I’m going for the upset in East Lansing.

    6. Iowa over Penn State

    7. Bowling Green over Buffalo: Has Bowling Green been in the oddball game before? Poor Jeremy! UT may not be far from being an oddball team this year.
