The defense was a bit more consistent than the offense last year for Marshall. The unit held teams to under 24 points/game. There were some dismissals for off-the-field incidents. Below are some notes on the defense.
D-Line
Junior Delvin Johnson will be the starter at defensive tackle, but Senior Michael Janac will be his backup and he was honorable mention All-Conference USA last season. At Nose Tackle is senior Johnny Jones. At the ends are junior Vinny Curry and true freshman James Rouse. Curry was also honorable mention All-Conference USA last season. The D-Line should be solid for Marshall.
Linebackers
The best returning player on defense is senior linebacker Mario Harvey. He was the lead tackler last year with 117 tackles and 7 sacks last year, earning him the nickname "Thumper." Also at linebacker are sophomore Devin Arrington and junior Tyson Gale.
Secondary
The safeties are sophomore Donald Brown and junior Omar Brown. Brown is returning as a starter. At corner are junior Ahmed Shakoor and senior DJ Wingate. Shakoor is a returning starter. Wingate is taking the place of dismissed DeQuan Bembry. This unit is very inexperienced and may struggle against the pass.
