Here are the games for the Guest Panel to consider this week. Below are the standings as well. Mel Kiper held off the pack behind him, and still holds a one game lead at first place. Old Bag of Man and Philly Cheese were the only panelists to go 6-0 and it helped them jump from fifth to a tie for second, making it a large group of five panelists at 16-8.

Buckeye Cock:
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to point out that Braxton Miller is nowhere near as explosive of a runner as Pryor or Troy Smith. I know that he's still young and has a ways to go but just pointing out my observations.
1. Ohio State - I don't really want to pick the Buckeyes because I have a feeling Michigan State will win this pretty easily but I can't root against my Buckeyes at home.
2. Wisconsin - Welcome to the Big 10 (11) <12> Nebraska!
3. A&M - They bounce back pretty easily after a tough loss to OK State.
4. Clemson - I like Clemson in this one because I think VA Tech is having a down year but I'm worried that they are not at home.
5. Alabama - SEC blowout
6. NM State - I was advised by my friend that went to UNM to pick UNM especially since everyone seems to be pretty excited that they fired their coach but I can't do it.
Michigan State over Ohio State. Braxton finds the going tougher vs. Sparty, and Dantonio gets his elusive win vs. OSU, albeit not against The Vest. 17-13.
ReplyDeleteWisconsin jumps around over Nebraska. Not overwhelmed with Wisky's competition so far, but Madison on a (drunken) Sat night is a tough call for a road team. As we well know...
Texas A&M over Arkansas. We will see if a lower level SEC team can beat one of the Big 12's top three. If Hogs win, watch A&M's season become a downward spiral.
Virginia Tech over Clemson, as the first road game of the year doesn't go well for the Tigers. Dabo forgets to pack team's play chart.
Alabama over Florida. Trent Richardson is still gonna win the Heisman.
New Mexico St. over New Mexico. Is New Mexico being coached by the assistant coach that the just-fired head coach assaulted last year? If State lost to OU, but beat Minnesota, does that ensure that OU would finish 10th place in the Big Ten? And do any of the other panelists wonder what pregame tailgating is like at a NMSt-New Mexico game?

Pat Head's Picks:
ReplyDelete1. Ohio State over Michigan state: It was good to see Braxton Miller control the offense for over 90% of the game. Seems like he does a better job leading the team after his fist series. But, the Buckeyes' lack of a passing game was pretty evident last week. Let's hope they can figure that out before the Spartans arrive in C-bus. I think this game'll be close, but the Buckeyes prevail.
2. Wisconsin over Nebraska: I certainly do not think this'll be the routing predicted by the oddsmakers, but I do think, as someone I love recently said, winning in Camp Randall Stadium at night is no easy task and the Cornhuskers are just not ready yet.
3. Arkansas over Texas A&M: A&M disappointed me last week with their lackluster 2nd half loss to Oklahoma State. I think A&M will have a tough time recovering from that loss. They haven't won in Cowboys stadium yet, and this weekend won't be any different. Razorbacks pull off an upset in Texas.
4. Virginia Tech over Clemson: I absolutely hate it when Joe picks a Virginia Tech game. If I had time to go back through my picks to see if I have ever picked a Hokies game right I would, but I don't have that kind of time. For my beloved Grandfather who passed away this year, I'll pick his alma mater VPI.
5. Alabama over Florida: Not sure Florida has recovered quite yet.
6. New Mexico St. over New Mexico: New Mexico State at least has a win over a Big 10 opponent. That's gotta say something.
MSU v OSU - win Buckeyes. Any team that loses to Notre Dame is monkey puke in MKH's book. This of course doesn't mean it won't be ugly but hopefully Miller continues to develop while the Fighting Dantonio's discover new ways to get their asses handed to them in lackluster fashion.
ReplyDeleteNebraska v Wisconsin - Oddly Vegas tells us the Badgers give 9 here. Now MKH was always going to pick the the Badgers in this one - they've looked to be a top 3 team all season - but it will be a smidge tougher than what the desert odds-men are calling for given the 12PM start. Camp Randall wins a close one.
Arkansas v Texas A&M - MKH believes the SEC is the best conference in CF today however the odds-men are hearkening to the current bias when they tell us Arkansas is giving 3 in this one. SOS to this point, key injuries for the Razorbacks, plus A&M at home. While losing in close fashion last week allowed this contributor to remain in first - the Aggies turn the tables week 5 and break the Arkansas out-of-conference win streak.
Clemson v Virgina Tech - Given the love of the Hokies a particular fellow panelist (who shall remain unnamed however is distinguishable through annual man-crushes and seasonal character-specific weekly appendaged lock-down picks) MKH does not have it in himself to pick against them. Then again neither should any other student of the odds or casual fan of football. Tech wins.
Alabama v Florida - As MKH's Florida-Australian counterpart offered when queried about this game 'My heart says UF but my mind says Bama...our defense is not good enough yet!' Pair that with this week's conservative approach to pick-em (and a blissful ignorance of the fact it's a SEC night game in the Swamp where the tide has marginal effect) and we're left with the higher ranked team on top - the Crimson red-necks win.
New Mexico St. v New Mexico - Trying to avoid convoluted this-team-beat-that-team-who-lost-to-these-guys logic but without anything else to go on for this clash of titans...here goes. The Aggie's (NMS) only win comes against Minnesota who earlier in the season played USC fairly well but has since managed only to beat Miami (OH) who also has no wins. USC, it should also happily be mentioned, lost recently to Arizona State. Meanwhile the Lobos (NM proper?) have been torched by the likes of Colorado State, Arkansas, Texas Tech and recently Sam Houston - all sides with a mountain of wins among them. Thus based on SSOS (secondary SOS) and home field advantage, logic points to victory by the New Mexico Lobos. QED
Week 5 finds Paul the O in familiar watery surroundings cruising the Bermuda triangle with his non-tentacled but never-the-less better half. In his absence he has requested an undisclosed guest to make his picks for him, with the understanding there can be no financial/moral/ethical/personal/environmental accountability for success or failure at the hands of said guest-picker. In addition Paul acknowledges the guest picker neither shares nor has had a man-crush of any sort with members of the NCAAF community, but does not exclude the possibility of Andrew Luck making the grade once becoming a Seahawk/Viking/49'er...etc.
ReplyDeleteOn to the picks...
Ohio State gloriously sends the rest of the Michigan State sideline to the hospital to hang with their coach...ohhh too soon?
Badgers corn-hole the Huskers in a top-heavy BIG10 dance-party. Nebraska will have better success the rest of the way.
Texas A&M slice-up the Razorbacks and slow roast their ribs over a mesquite bbq pit.
Virginia Tech de-stripes Clemson in a manner that can only be described as Hokie.
Alabama gorged from their own personal Razorback roast opts to sell the Gator hides they acquire this week to some high fashion clothing lines.
New Mexico defeats State mostly due to the fact history favors the home-crowd and universal physics allowed the coin to fall tails.
Old Bag of Man finally figured out the webpage blog.
ReplyDelete1) OSU. Because Sparty will be Sparty.
2) Wisconsin. Welcome to the Big 10 Huskers.
3) Texas A&M. Showing why they will be a contender in the SEC....for just one year and then they'll be a nonfactor.
4) Va Tech. Clemson is much like Sparty...and they'll choke.
5) Alabama. Much better game two years ago.
6) New Mexico St. When these two teams get together you can throw out the record books.

ReplyDelete1. Ohio State over Michigan State - buckeyes need this one. i think if they fall to michigan state, it could lead to a rough few weeks ahead!

3. Texas A&M over Arkansas
4. Virginia Tech over Clemson
5. Florida over Alabama -
6. New Mexico St. over New Mexico - 0 and 4 with no coach? sounds like this will be a rebuilding year for los lobos!
