Here are the games for the Guest Panel to consider this week. Below are the standings as well. Mel Kiper is still in first, but he is joined by Philly Cheese. Philly Cheese was 6-0 and was one of only three panelists to correctly pick Rutgers. There was limited movement for the rest of the Guest Panel.

OLD BAG OF MANS SLIDES IN THE STANDINGS. IF I WERE NOTRE DAME I WOULD HAVE GONE UP.
ReplyDelete1) OSU. MSU HAS NO OFFENSE BESIDES BELL. IF WE STOP HIM I THINK OSU CAN COME OUT OF EAST LANSING WITH THE WIN.
2) ILLINOIS. TOUGH ONE TO PICK. I'M SURE THE GAME WILL BE ON ABC BECAUSE PEOPLE SHOULD CARE ABOUT PSU STILL.
3) TEXAS.
4) WVU. BAYLOR NEEDS RG3 BACK TO BEAT WVU.
5) NEBRASKA. REASON, I HATE BIELEMA.
6) UTEP. THEY ALMOST BEAT BIELEMA.

My pick against Ohio State is because of their lack of defense that has been present for the first 4 games. I also think MSU at home gets it done. If you think about it, OSU is limited with what it does on offense as Miller does ALL the work. I'd presume MSU will spot someone or two on him every play and their game plan will be focused on stopping his run.
Big story this week on E. Gordon Gee (or as my brother calls him G. Gordon Gee) about his lavish expenses on bow ties among other things. But no one can criticize his fundraising skills!
Penn State was also a tough pick. I can see either team winning. Just went with PSU because I like their story. Remember none of the current coaches or players had anything to do whatsoever with the scandal. They are being unfairly penalized by the NCAA.*
As a huge Mack Brown fan and fan of Texas and Austin, I am going with the Longhorns.**
I have located my secret source for oddball games. After an infuriating Troy victory last week, I am confident that East Carolina picks up the W. I am also confident that this year's odd ball games have contributed to a high stress level for me.
Thought of the week:
Speak out loud in the direction of your dreams. If you speak and think negatively, you will go in a negative direction.
Props of the week: Philadelphia Cream Cheese!
*Joe Paterno also got a bad deal. Taking away all his wins and the statue was unfair. It's one thing to criticize someone. It's another thing when they are not alive to defend themself.
**Mack Brown wins big games.

After Funtik’s spotless record from Week #1, it’s been middling (at best) results from that point onwards – only a 10-8 record in the past three weeks. A 4-2 record in Week #4 was a small step in the right direction, let’s build on the (slight) momentum of last week and shoot for a 6-0 record this week!
ReplyDeleteMichigan State def. Ohio State: I know, this is a sacrilegious pick. Here me out though, Guest Panel readers. What has the Ohio State team done so far this season to inspire any confidence at all? They should have lost to a mediocre (at best) Pac-12 team at home, one of the worst teams in D-1 played them pretty close at their home stadium for 3 quarters (and beat the spread by 23 points!), and they also struggled with an average Conference USA team at home as well. None of these results really prompt me to pick Ohio State in this match-up, on the road, in the Big Ten conference opener. The Spartans, in spite of the ND game result, still have a very good defense, and must be pretty upset with themselves for the results of the past two weeks (the ND loss and the close victory over The Moderator’s favorite team, Eastern Michigan). It’ll be a close game coming down to the final 5 minutes, but the Spartans eek out a 20-17 victory.
Penn State def. Illinois: Don’t look now, but this Penn State team actually looks like it has some semblance of a pass offense. That, and the fact that Illinois lost by almost 30 points. To Louisiana Tech. At home. Makes this game a relatively easy pick.
Texas def. Oklahoma St.: The Longhorns looked to be an improved team this season, finally emerging from the two year Colt McCoy departure hangover (I mean, heck, who WOULDN’T be crushed by the departure of Funtik the Hog’s 2009 College Football Hog Crush of the Year?!?!). That said, it’s not the Longhorns have played any world beaters so far, but, I’ll go with the team that some has semblance of a defense versus the one that thinks defense is a dirty word.
West Virginia def. Baylor: I really like the Mountaineers in this game. Not only because they have one of the best mascots in the entire nation (the coonskin cap wearin’, musket totin’, full heavy beard sportin’ Davy Crockett look-alike), but because they stand a good chance of winning the conference title in their first year as a member. And with two teams that emphasize offense over defense, for the degenerate gambler Guest Panel members, go with the over in this game (whatever it may be). Mark this game down as Funtik the Hog’s “Clairvoyant Snout Bucket Rummage” Pick of the Week for Week #5 (3-1 record thus far this season, yea, I know I went with the easy pick last week…so sue me).
Nebraska def. Wisconsin: For the record, Rex Burkhead was a finalist for Funtik the Hog’s College Football Hog Crush of the Year for 2012. But, after much deliberation, “Man of” Steele Jantz was just too tough of a foe for “Sexy Rexy” to overcome. Fear not though Rex, you are a star member of a much better football team, and that certainly counts for something.
East Carolina def. UTEP: I hate to say it, but this is actually a really tough game to pick. As an aside, definitely two of the better team nicknames in D-1 as well, the Miners and the Pirates. Going to go with the Pirates here, if for no other reason than they’re playing at home, and, it was just National Talk Like a Pirate Day last week, so, I gotta pay my respects in some manner.

Fresh off a Singaporean bender...Mel Kiper spews forth his equivalent 'snout-bucket-rummage...'
ReplyDeleteMichigan State def. Ohio State - there's always next year...
Penn State def. Illinois - the Illini are probably worse than us...probably
Oklahoma St def Texas - home team advantage worth 3 on a 2.5 take for Texas = 0.5 point margin of victory for the Cowboys!
West Virginia def. Baylor - Jeremiah Johnson was a mountian man and wore bear-skins...this and the fact WV is better is the basis for the pick
Nebraska def. Wisconsin - Nebraska hasn't been looking too good - but then neither have the Badgers...going with Vegas/Home field on this one
East Carolina def. UTEP - Oddsmakers have propped MKH thusfar in oddball pick-em...sticking with the positive trend
