This will be the 93rd matchup between these two schools, with OSU leading 59-29-4. The two schools had played continuously since 1902, but due to the Big Ten rotational schedule they did not play in 2003 and 2004. The Buckeyes are 31-12 when playing at Illinois. OSU won the game last year in Columbus, 40-2. Illinois only scored on a failed OSU two-point conversion. Troy Smith threw for 298 yards and three touchdowns, two to Santonio Holmes and one to Ted Ginn covering 73 yards. Antonio Pittman ran for 96 yards and two touchdowns.

Jim Tressel is 59-13 in his sixth year at Ohio State. He is 194-70-2 in his 21 years of coaching. Tressel is 2-1 against Illinois.
Coach Ron Zook is 4-15 in his second year at Illinois. He is 27-30 in his fifth year of coaching at Illinois and Florida. He is 0-1 against Ohio State. Zook is from Zanesville, Ohio and played defensive back at Miami (OH). He coached high school football in Ohio before working as an assistant coach at a few schools. He was the defensive backs coach at OSU in '88-'90.
