The Series
Last Year
Last season the Ohio State defense and running game carried the team while the passing game was limited to one completion. Illinois turned the ball over three times, with two interceptions and a lost fumble, and OSU was able to score 14 points off those turnovers. Boom Herron came back after a two separate suspensions covering the first six games of the season, and for the second year in a row against Illinois his running game proved critical. In this game he had 114 yards and one rushing touchdown in the third quarter. Drew Basil had a 43 yard field goal in the first quarter against the wind, to give him eight consecutive FGs in a row after missing the first two of the season. The only pass of the day was a touchdown pass to tightend Jake Stoneburner in the fourth quarter, who now leads the team with six TD catches. The defense limited Illinois to 285 yards and didn't give up points until halfway through the fourth quarter when Scheelhaase threw a short TD pass to Wilson.
The Illibuck Trophy
There are many trophy games in the Big Ten, and OSU has the Illibuck with Illinois. The game against Illinois is the only trophy game for the Buckeyes. The Illibuck is the second oldest trophy in the Big Ten. Starting in 1925 these two schools passed a real turtle to the winner of the game. The live turtle represented the long life expectancy of the rivalry between the two teams. However in 1927 the turtle died and was replaced by a wooden replica. At halftime of the game, members of honorary societies from both schools meet to pass the the trophy to the winner of the game from the previous year. In the past the ceremony included the smoking of a peace pipe. OSU leads the Illibuck series 59-23-2.
The Coaches
In the 11th season of his coaching career his record is 113-23. He is 9-0 at Ohio State in his first season. After being a two-sport star in high school, he briefly played baseball for the Atlanta Braves farm system before he attended the University of Cincinnati. He earned his graduate degree from Ohio State and worked with the team as a graduate assistant under Earle Bruce from 1986-1987. He was an assistant coach at Illinois State under former OSU defensive coordinator Jim Heacock. He later re-joined Earle Bruce at Colorado St. In 1996 he was hired as an assistant coach under Lou Holtz at Notre Dame, and he remained with Notre Dame through 2000. In 2001 he started his head coaching career at Bowling Green and in two years he had a record of 17-6. He was hired at Utah in 2003. In his first year Utah won its bowl game, and during the second year the team was undefeated and won the Fiesta Bowl. He was 22-2 in two years at Utah. In 2005 he took the helm at Florida and immediately guided them to a 9-3 record and an Outback Bowl victory. In his second year he had a 13-1 record and a BCS National Championship victory over Ohio State. In his remaining four years he lost one bowl game, and also added another BCS National Championship and victories in the Sugar and Outback Bowl. He had a record of 65-15 during his six years at Florida.
Tim Beckman
In his fourth season as a head coach he is 23-22, with a 2-6 record in his first year at Illinois. Beckman graduated from the University of Findlay, where he played defensive back. His coaching career started at Auburn as a graduate assistant, and he also was an defensive assistant at Western Carolina and Elon. From 1998-2004 he was an assistant under Urban Meyer at Bowling Green. He was an assistant coach at Ohio State under Jim Tressel in 2005-2006. After Ohio State he was the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma State. Tim Beckman's first head coaching position was at Toledo, where he coached for three seasons, and led the team to two bowl games. Beckman is 0-2 against Ohio State with two losses as the coach of Toledo in 2009 and 2011.

What to Expect
I expect Ohio State to be able to pass against a relatively young secondary. Look for OSU to have 250 passing yards. Penn State has not allowed a rushing touchdown in four games, including last week against Iowa, but that won't be the case this week. The OSU running game will be slowed down by the PSU linebackers, but it still should get at least 220 yards on the ground. Ohio State will win 38-35.
Things to Watch
Linebacker Etienne Sabino is expected to be out at least 2-3 more weeks due to his leg surgery. In practice running back Jordan Hall re-injured his knee and may miss the rest of the season, with a medical redshirt now a possibility. Braxton Miller was examined for concussion symptoms and a possible neck injury on Saturday, but he has been cleared to practice and play. Johnathan Hankins missed a few plays on Saturday, but Urban Meyer said he is fine. On special teams, DeVan Bogard suffered an ACL injury, and is out for the season. Bogard joins fellow special teams player Najee Murray, who suffered an ACL injury in the week prior to the Indiana game. Receiver Corey Brown had a head injury in the Purdue game, but should be available. Linebacker Joshua Perry was out last week, but should be ready this week.
Schedule Update
For those of you looking at your 2016 schedule you can pencil in the following non-conference opponents: Bowling Green, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Central Michigan. While you are at it, pull out the 2020 and 2021 calendar to add games at Oregon and against Oregon in Columbus.
OSU Last Week
First Half
On Purdue's first offensive play of the day, Caleb TerBush threw a pass to running back Akeem Shavers, who eluded linebacker Storm Klein and ran for an 83-yard touchdown. Both teams traded possessions, and later in the first quarter Braxton Miller led a 67-yard drive, completed with a 8 yard run by Miller for a touchdown. After the touchdown Ohio State kicked the ball, and Purdue returned it 100 yards for a touchdown. It appeared that no Ohio State defender touched Purdue on both the first Purdue touchdown and the 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Neither team scored in the second quarter, so the score at halftime was 13-7 in favor of Purdue.
Second Half
Halfway through the third quarter Carlos Hyde capped off a drive with a 2-yard touchdown run. Ohio State briefly took a 20-13 lead, but Purdue responded with a 31-yard touchdown pass. Like the two earlier Purdue touchdowns, the player reached the endzone untouched by an OSU defender. Bradley Roby blocked a field goal attempt by Purdue. Ohio State took over at the 24-yard line, and on the first play Miller ran 37-yards, but his body came down hard on the turf and he needed help off the field. Miller was later transported to the hospital for an apparent head injury. Kenny Guiton took over, but Ohio State could not get a first down and missed a 50-yard field goal. In the fourth quarter Ohio State took over at the one-yard line. Carlos Hyde ran for five yards, but on the next possession Ohio State was called for a illegal block in the endzone, resulting in a safety. Purdue increased its lead to eight points, the score was 22-14. Kenny Guiton had another shot at Purdue, but Ohio State only moved the ball 14-yards and Guiton threw an interception with just over three minutes remaining. Purdue was unable to run out the clock and a was forced to punt the ball.
Late Fourth Quarter
Chris Fields returned the punt to the 39-yard line, setting up a short field for the Buckeyes. Ohio State was down eight points and Kenny Guiton took over with 47 seconds left and no timeouts. Guiton completed the first pass of the drive to Devin Smith for 39 yards, placing the ball at the Purdue 22-yard line. Guiton completed the next pass to Evan Spencer for eight yards. On second down Guiton was unable to connect with a receiver. On third down, Hyde rushed for first down, placing the ball at the 11-yard line. Guiton's next two passes were incomplete. On third and ten, Guiton did not connect with his receiver but Purdue was called for pass interference. On first and goal from the two-yard line Guiton threw to Chris fields for a short touchdown. Fields had his hands under the ball as he went to the ground, and the video review confirmed the touchdown. It was Fields first touchdown reception. Ohio State went for two points, and opted to pass instead of run. Guiton rolled to the right and tight end Jeff Heuerman broke free to the left side of the endzone and caught the pass, to tie the score 22-22. Purdue was not able to run a play after the kickoff, prior to the end of regulation.
Overtime
Ohio State had the ball first in overtime, and Guiton was unable to run or pass on first down. Jake Stoneburner caught a critical first down, moving the ball 17 yards. Carlos Hyde rushed for five yards on first down. On second down Kenny Guiton ran for two yards. Carlos Hyde scored on the next play with a one yard run into the endzone. The defense stepped up and forced two incomplete passes on Purdue's first two downs. On first down, safety C.J. Barnett broke up the pass with a big hit. Linebacker Ryan Shazier put pressure on Caleb TerBush to force the incomplete pass on second down. On third down TerBush found Gabe Holmes for a five yard reception. Purdue called timeout and on fourth and five, TerBush threw another incomplete pressure while facing pressure from the Ohio State defensive line. Ohio State won in overtime 29-22.
Scouting the Nittany Lions
Penn State lost its first two games against Ohio (14-24) and Virginia (16-17), but has won every game since those two losses. Penn State has victories against Navy (34-7), Temple (24-13), Illinois (35-7), Northwestern (39-28), and Iowa (38-14). The Iowa game was an impressive win, as it was on the road and the defense only allowed one touchdown, which occurred in garbage minutes with 4:11 remaining in the fourth quarter. Iowa only had 209 offensive yards. This season Penn State averages 149 rushing yards, 257 passing yards, and 28.5 points/game. The defense allows 113 rushing yards, 209 passing yards, and 15.7 points/game.
Offense
Quarterback Matt McGloin has thrown 14 touchdowns and two interceptions. He has completed 62% for 1788 yards, leading the conference in passing yards. The leading receivers are Allen Robinson, Kyle Carter, and Matt Lehman. Robins leads the team with 8 touchdowns. Carter and Lehman are tightends, and they are integral part of the passing game. The running duties have been split among a number of players including Zach Zwinak, Bill Belton, and Derek Day. Belton, who was converted from receiver, had a breakout game at Iowa, with a 103-yard day and three touchdowns. In the previous games Belton only had 133 rushing yards and zero touchdowns.
Defense
At linebacker are Michael Mauti and Gerald Hodges, who were both recently named as semifinalists for the Butkus Award. Mauti leads the team with 65 tackles and three interceptions. The leader on the d-line is Jordan Hill, who has 24 career starts. Cornerback Stephon Morris is the most experienced player in the secondary with 20 starts. Morris has 29 tackles this season. Backup cornerback Jesse Della Valle is in his first year as a starter, and he also returns kicks and punts. He had a 46-yard kickoff return against Iowa.
The Series
Last Year
On senior day 2011 in Ohio Stadium, the Buckeyes were not able to come away with a victory over Penn State, despite the return of Devier Posey at receiver. Penn State won with a score of 20-14. Both teams were limited to scoring in the first half, with Penn State scoring ten points in the first quarter on a 39 yard touchdown run and a 43 yard FG. Ohio State only scored in the second quarter, with one touchdown run by Braxton Miller and a touchdown pass to Jake Stoneburner. Both teams made adjustments and shut down the opposing offense in the second half. For the third straight week Ohio State fell behind 10-0 early in the game, as the defense struggled with the PSU wildcat formation. Miller had 105 rushing yards and was 7 of 17 passing for 83 yards. Boom Herron didn't eclipse the 100 yard mark, he gained 76 yards for the day. Fans saw an immediate impact of the first start for freshman linebacker Ryan Shazier, who had 15 tackles. He was in for the injured Andrew Sweat, who apparently had a concussion in practice before Purdue and was removed from the Purdue game. Two fumbles by Ohio State in the second half proved fatal, and the offense couldn't match the intensity shown by the OSU defense as it stopped PSU on a 4th and 1 goal line stand in the third quarter. The final OSU drive was not pretty as Miller had three incompletions and was penalized for intentional grounding.
The Coaches
In the 11th season of his coaching career his record is 112-23. He is 8-0 at Ohio State in his first season. In his remaining four years he lost one bowl game, and also added another BCS National Championship and victories in the Sugar and Outback Bowl. He had a record of 65-15 during his six years at Florida.
Bill O'Brien
In his first season as a head coach he is 5-2. Prior to Penn State, O'Brien was the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots. Before New England he was an assistant coach at Brown University, Georgia Tech, Maryland, and Duke. O'Brien was a linebacker and defensive end at Brown University.

What to Expect
Scouting the Boilermakers
Purdue is 3-3 and 0-2 in the Big Ten. The Boilermakers have victories over Eastern Kentucky (48-6), Eastern Michigan (54-16), and Marshall (51-41). Purdue has losses to Notre Dame (20-17), Michigan (44-13), and Wisconsin (38-14). The team averages 165 rushing yards, 222 passing yards, and 32 points/game. The defense allows 199 rushing yards/game, 212 passing yards, and 27.5 points/game.
Offense
Starting quarterback Caleb TerBush has thrown for 2,642 career yards with 721 yards this season. Backup quarterback Robert Marve, in his sixth season, started the opener, but was replaced by Caleb TerBush. Marve had his third ACL injury in the Notre Dame game earlier this season, but he has elected to delay surgery until the offseason and he is playing with a brace. Akeem Shavers is at running back and has 324 yards this season, with a season high of 74 yards against Eastern Kentucky. At receiver Antavian Edison has 27 consecutive games with a reception, with 371 reception yards and five touchdowns. Also catching the ball are O.J. Ross, Gabe Holmes, and Gary Bush.
Defense
Defensive tackle Kawann Short is third nationally with 42.5 tackles this season. The Purdue defense has nine interceptions, and safety Landon Feichter leads the team with three. Linebacker Will Lucas has 29 tackles this season, and he had 10 tackles in Columbus two years ago.
Things to Watch
Nathan Williams didn't make the trip to Indiana due to a concussion, but he is expected to play this weekend. Linebacker Etienne Sabino suffered a lower leg injury in the Nebraska game, had surgery, and is expected to be out at least three more weeks. The injuries on defense have forced Urban Meyer to shift fullback Zach Boren to linebacker. Running back Jordan Hall is still out due to his knee.
ACL University
Purdue has had its share of ACL injuries in basketball and football. Basketball star Robbie Hummel had two ACL injuries while at Purdue. In football, running back Ralph Bolden has had three ACL injuries, quarterback Robert Marve has had three injuries, running back Brandon Cotton has had one injury, and quarterback Rob Henry has had one injury. Ralph Bolden and Robert Marve are expected to available as backups this week.
OSU Last Week
Indiana made a short field goal in the third quarter, and Ohio State quickly responded with a 67-yard touchdown run by Miller. The scoring continued in the third quarter with a 76-yard pass by Indiana. Miller led a drive but was replaced by Kenny Guiton who had a short touchdown pass to Carlos Hyde. In the next possession Indiana moved the ball and made a 44-yard field goal to make the score 38-27. Carlos Hyde scored off a 1-yard run, after the video replay officials ruled that he was down at the 1-yard line in the previous play. Indiana moved the ball again, scoring on a 1-yard run. Ohio State scored its last touchdown with another long pass to Devin Smith, this one for 46-yards. The score was 52-34 and it appeared Ohio State had sealed a victory with six minutes left in the game. Indiana brought in third-string quarterback Nate Sudfeld who efficiently moved the offense, completing the drive with a 12-yard pass. Indiana recovered the onside kick and scored on a 25-yard touchdown pass with 1:05 left in the game. The Ohio State lead was cut down to three points. The Buckeyes recovered the next onside kick attempt, but it was not an easy recovery. Ohio State ran out the clock and won the game 52-49.
The Series
Last Time
OSU had some big plays last year against Purdue, but the effort was just enough to get the team into overtime and come away with the loss 26-23. Like the Indiana game in the previous week, Ohio State gave up early points and was unable to score early in the game, resulting in a 10-0 lead by the opponent in both games. The Buckeye offense scored its first points a few minutes into the second quarter to put the game at 10-7, but Purdue had a touchdown run near the end of the half and went into halftime with a 17-7 lead. Drew Basil missed a 50 yard FG attempt at the end of the first half. Miller had an impressive looking 6 yard run into the endzone in the third quarter to put Ohio State within 3 points. Purdue added three points to its lead early in the fourth quarter with a 44-yard FG. Both teams exchanged the ball as the defenses locked in, but Ohio State had one final possession that required some heroics by Braxton Miller to keep the drive going. Braxton Miller scrambled on 4th and 3, jumped over an Ohio State player, and found Jordan Hall open for a touchdown to tie the game. Unfortunately the PAT was blocked, leaving 55 seconds on the clock for Purdue. Ohio State elected to kick it on the ground, and Purdue had favorable field position. Purdue was almost in field goal range when second string quarterback Ralph Marve made his only major mistake for the day by throwing an interception to Orhian Johnson. Ohio State ran out the clock and had first possession in overtime. Ohio State had to settle for a field goal after a pass fell short on third down. Purdue moved the ball with ease and with the ball on the one yard line Marve emptied the backfield, spreading out the Ohio State defenders, and he ran the ball in for the go-ahead touchdown in overtime.
The Coaches
In the 11th season of his coaching career his record is 111-23. He is 7-0 at Ohio State in his first season. What to Expect
Things to Watch
Safety C.J. Barnett has been dealing with an ankle injury, but is expected to play this Saturday. Running back Jordan Hall is still out due to his knee. Linebacker Etienne Sabino suffered a lower leg injury in the Nebraska game, had surgery, and is expected to be out at least four weeks.
Future Schedules
Ohio State recently added Texas to the 2022 and 2023 schedules. Ohio State already has the following high profile non-conference games scheduled; California in 2013, Virginia Tech in 2014, Cincinnati in 2014, North Carolina in 2015, Virginia Tech in 2015, Oklahoma in 2016, Oklahoma in 2017, North Carolina in 2017, Cincinnati in 2018, TCU in 2018, and TCU in 2019.
Scouting the Hoosiers
Indiana is 2-3 with wins in the first two games against Indiana State (24-17) and UMass (45-6). After losing quarterback Tre Roberson, the team has lost its last three games against Ball State (39-41), Northwestern (29-44), and Michigan State (27-31). The Hoosiers average 167 rushing yards/game and 304 passing yards/game.
Offense
Indiana lost its starting quarterback Tre Roberson with a broken leg in the second game of the season. The offense is now led by two quarterbacks, Cam Coffman and Nate Sudfeld. Coffman has been the starter for the last three games, while Sudfeld has seen minutes in two of those games. It is not clear if Indiana will stick with Coffman, a junior college transfer, as the starter this week, in light of the three losses. Neither Coffman nor Sudfeld has the running ability of Roberson and both have not rushed for over 20 yards in any of the last three games. Coffman is 67% for 801 yards and six touchdowns. At running back is Stephen Houston who has 277 rushing yards this season, and he will also catch the ball. At receiver are Shane Wynn, Kofi Hughes, and Cody Latimer. Latimer is 4th in the Big Ten with 363 receiving yards. Receiver Nick Stoner also returns punts, and he is an All-American in the 4x400 relay. The O-Line is not very experienced, with two true freshman at left tackle and right guard.
Defense
The D-Line has two experienced seniors with Larry Black and Adam Replogle. Replogle leads the team with 149 tackles. All three linebackers enrolled last spring as transfers, two from junior college. At cornerback is a converted safety, Kenny Mullen, and first year starter Brian Williams.

What to Expect
Things to Watch
Braxton Miller had two occasions last Saturday when he missed playing time over concerns of injuries. There have been no reports of injuries and he is expected to start this week. Jordan Hall was pulled from the game for a knee injury, and he is not expected to play this week. A decision has not been made on whether safety C.J. Barnett will play.
Tyrone We Hardly Knew You
You may have missed it in the news, but an OSU receiver was dismissed from the team. Sophomore Tyrone Williams was highly touted out of East Cleveland with his 6'6" height. He only had five career receptions for 74 yards and he constantly dropped passes thrown his direction. Urban Meyer said he "violated team rules" which is a generic description that could involve a variety of violations. Williams had trouble last year with the coaches, including a missed trip to the Gator Bowl
Homecoming Game at Night
Ohio State hosts its 91st Homecoming game this weekend. Ohio State is 65-19 in Homecoming games. It is a rare occasion for Ohio State to host a night game, but the Buckeyes and Cornhuskers will meet up at 8PM this weekend. Ohio State is 7-3 in home night games, with the most recent game being a win against Wisconsin last season. Below are the night games, which first started in Ohio Stadium in 1985:
Scouting the Cornhuskers
The Cornhuskers are 4-1 with victories over Souther Miss (49-20), Arkansas State (42-13), Idaho State (73-7), and Wisconsin (30-27). Nebraska has only one loss, UCLA 36-30. Last week Nebraska had a big comeback victory against Wisconsin overcoming a 27-10 deficit. Nebraska average 44 points/game with 305 rushing yards/game and 215 passing yards/game. The defense allows teams to score 20 points/game, rush for 152 yards/game, and pass for 188 yards/game.
Offense
At QB Taylor Martinez who has 4,779 career passing yards and 2,137 career rushing yards. He is known for his ability to run, and he worked on his passing game this past summer. So far this season his numbers have improved, while he completed 56% last season, at this point he is completing 67%. In 13 games last year he threw for 2,089 passing yards, and in five games he already has over half that yardage with 1,059 yards. He also has thrown for 11 touchdowns, while he threw for a total of 13 touchdowns for all 13 games last season. At running back is Rex Burkhead, who missed playing time in 2.5 games this season due to injury. In his first game back from the injury he ran for 119 yards against Idaho State. In the Wisconsin game he ran for 86 yards, making his total 273 yards this season with three touchdowns. In Burkhead's absence Ameer Abdullah has 486 yards with five touchdowns. Abdullah also returns punts and kicks and had a 83-yard kickoff return last weekend. At receiver are Kenny Bell, Quincy Enunwa, and Jamal Turner. Bell leads with 330 yards and four touchdowns. Nebraska may not want to depend on field goals, because Brett Maher is only 7/12, missing one under 39 yards, two under 49 yards, and two under 59 yards.
Defense
The veteran on the D-line is Cameron Meredith, who has started 28 straight games. He has been limited to two tackles in the last two games, but was credited for limiting the Wisconsin running game. Leading the team in tackles and sacks is linebacker Will Compton with 44 tackles and three sacks. This team does not intercept the ball often, with only three interceptions as a team. At safety is P.J. Smith who had two pass break-ups last week against Wisconsin.
OSU Last Week
Both teams made field goals in the third quarter, a 50-yarder for Michigan State's Conroy and 26-yards for OSU's Basil. Penalties came at inopportune times for the Buckeyes and Michigan State had the ball at the Ohio State 29 yard line after a personal foul. Andrew Maxwell threw a short pass to Keith Mumphery and he was able to navigate through the Ohio State defenders who tried to strip the ball, and he dragged them into the endzone to put Michigan State ahead 13-10. In Ohio State's next possession Miller lead a drive, finished off with a 63-yard pass to Devin Smith, who beat single coverage on the sideline and ran in for a touchdown, giving Ohio State the lead 17-13. Early in the fourth quarter Miller fumbled the ball again in Michigan State territory, and went down with an apparent knee injury. The defense held Michigan State, but again a costly penalty gave MSU life and Conroy made a 48-yard field goal, putting the score at 17-16. Ohio State was forced to punt the next possession and Michigan State had to punt in its next possession. With Miller back in Ohio State picked up some critical first downs behind running back Carlos Hyde and the blocking by the offensive line, and the team ran out the clock, winning the game 17-16. The OSU defense held Big Ten leading rusher Le'Veon Bell to 45 yards, while Braxton Miller ran for 136 yards and passed for 179 yards.
The Series
Last Year
Ohio State lost its first Big Ten game of 2011, with a final score of 34-27. Ohio State built a 14 point lead at halftime with a field goal by Basil, Miller's touchdown pass to Stoneburner, a 63 yard touchdown run by Hyde, and a second FG by Basil. Nebraska was limited to two FGs in the first half. In the third quarter Carlos Hyde added a second touchdown run, building the Ohio State lead to 21 points. Unfortunately that was the last score by the Buckeyes, as the offense came to a screeching halt with a fumble by Miller and his ankle injury on the next possession. After struggling in the first half against the OSU defense, Nebraska scored four touchdowns in the second half to take the lead and eventually the victory. Bauserman came in for the injured Miller and he struggled by only completing one pass in ten attempts. Miller finished with 95 passing yards and 91 rushing yards. Carlos Hyde lead Ohio State with 104 rushing yards. Nebraska scored the last 28 points. The 21 point Ohio State lead was the largest lead overcome by an Ohio State opponent.
The Coaches
In the 11th season of his coaching career his record is 109-23. He is 5-0 at Ohio State in his first season.
Bo Pelini
Bo Pelini is 43-17 in his fifth season as a head coach, all at Nebraska. He was the defensive coordinator at Nebraska for five years and served as the interim coach in the 2003 Alamo Bowl game. He also served as the co-defensive coordinator at Oklahoma for a year before serving as the defensive coordinator at LSU for three seasons (including the 2007 national championship game against OSU.) Pelini also was an assistant coach in the NFL for nine seasons. Prior to coaching, Pelini was a four-year letterman as a safety at Ohio State from 1987-1990.
