Dr. Funkenstein says:

1. Ohio State over Penn State - This is by far the toughest game yet and perhaps the toughest of the season for the Buckeyes. The homer in me says go with Ohio State. Oh, and I'll be there, so that should give us an edge.

2. Virginia Tech over Boston College - With the Tribe out of the playoffs I can now both watch this game and cast my scorn on 2 teams from Boston. (I don't really have anything against BC, that'll just be fun.)

3. Oregon over USC - The Trojans will not be able to stop Oregon's offense.

4. California over Arizona State - Cal is reeling, but this is the season of 2-game losing streaks for the top teams, and the Bears have already lost back-to-back games.

5. Rice over Marshall - Wouldn't have guessed I'd ever pick that 5 years ago.

1. Ohio State vs. Penn State
W-OSU: I hate that lion roar soundbyte.

2. Boston College vs. Virginia Tech (THURSDAY GAME)
W-BC: Who knows with the way the college football season has been going.

3. USC vs. Oregon
W-USC: Why do I subconsciously chuckle everytime I hear the word "Trojan"?

4. California vs. Arizona State
W-Cal:

5. Rice vs. Marshall
W-Rice: Rice is a food, I like food, therefore I like Rice.

Pat Head guesses:

1. Ohio State: Morelli is so streaky, this game will probably rest on whether he shows up. I think OSU has the edge w/ its tough defense though.

2. Boston College: Although I don't think BC will make it through the season unscathed by the upsets that is the 2007 season, VT has too many questions at quarterback position to win.

3. USC: This week is TOUGH! I'm not sure this is a good choice, but I think USC will pull out the upset.

4. California: Another shake-up in the Pac-10.

5. Marshall: Marshall will earn its first win this week.

The Football Man says:

Ohio State def. Penn State: I read in the newspaper earlier this week that PSU might potentially get sued by the Phoenix Coyotes for overuse of the "white out" crowd effect for their home football games, including this game (a term that the Coyotes had previously trademarked). Ah, and this is exactly the reason why Joe and I both went to law school.

Virginia Tech def. BC: VA Tech, playing on national TV on a Thurs. night home game. For those of you who need a refresher, VA Tech doesn't lose nationally televised night home games (well, with one major exception earlier this season in Baton Rouge, but let's not go there). BC finally gets exposed for the Catholic school it is in this game.

Oregon def. USC: Did ANYONE think that I would be making such a pick at the beginning of the college football season?! But USC has looked VERY ordinary the past 4 games (and no, beating ND 38-0 at ND is no longer considered a big accomplishment...unless you're stuck in a time warp, circa 1922). Could a team that makes VERY liberal use of Donald Duck as their mascot ACTUALLY win the Pac-10? Stay tuned folks...

California def. Arizona State: I do give Dennis Erickson and the Sun Devils a ton of credit for getting to 7-0 and #4 in the BCS rankings, what with all the distractions in Tempe...beautiful sunny weather, being the #1 party school in the nation, gorgeous co-eds, Mexico and LA only hours away, gorgeous co-eds, and even some not so slightly gorgeous co-eds. Nevertheless, if you examine their schedule, you can see why they're 7-0. I think my high school's JV football team could have at least 2 or 3 wins versus their first 7 opponents. The magical ride ends on Saturday night under the desert moon.

Rice def. Marshall: I'm not exactly sure how Rice can lose to Nicholls State at home, and beat Southern Miss. on the road, but, at least they have one win, and that's more than Marshall can say. Don't you remember the days when Marshall had such players as Randy Moss, Chad Pennington, and Byron Leftwich? No? Well, neither can any of its potential recruits either, apparently.

Batman.

After 5 in a row and no advancement up the list, I can only try to build another solid week of picking.

First props for the week: COTA bus drivers, anyone associated with Mansfield City Schools, CNN's Planet in Peril (worth watching), the Governator and the fire fighters.

I think the picks for this week are all rather difficult so it wouldn't suprise me if I missed them all (which has never happened).

1. Ohio State. Penn State is not very good. I watched the entire game last week vs Indiana...they needed about 5 fumble recoveries to win by 5 points. Penn State gets beaten this week.

2. Boston College. These thursday games almost always go to the home team. I think BC wants to prove to the nation that they are deserving of #2. They won't stay there, but I am hoping they will for 1 more week.

3. USC. I think both teams are really good. But I am giving the edge to USC because of tradition and head coaching. Pete Caroll and USC haven't lost 2 games in a season since when??

4. Arizona state wins.
5. Marshall wins.
