Indiana Coach Died

Indiana coach Terry Hoeppner died today of complications from a brain tumor at age 59. Hoeppner has been on medical leave for the past four months, due to treatment for a brain tumor over the past 18 months. Hoeppner was 9-14 in two seasons. Assistant coach Bill Lynch has been filling the role of head coach, and that will continue into the upcoming season. Hoeppner was head coach at Miami (OH) for eight seasons he was 57-39 with two bowl games in 2003 and 2004. He was an assistant for 11 seasons at Miami. One of his start players from Miami is Ben Roethlisberger, who is currently the QB for the Steelers. Our thoughts are with the Hoeppner family.

Torrence to split duties

Incoming freshman Devon Torrence from Canton South will split duties between professional baseball and college football. He was drafted earlier this month by the Houston Astros. He will report this week to the class-A minor league team in Greenville, Tennessee and will start at OSU in August. He will miss baseball spring training and part of the baseball season as he finishes spring quarter at Ohio State in early June. He could repeat this schedule for his second year, unless he decides to stay in one sport. The NCAA allows players to play professionally in one sport, while maintaining amateur status in another sport. Big Ten Network Update

It has been announced that the Big Ten Network, the new channel described in my previous post will broadcast three games, including the first two games against Youngstown State and Akron. The new channel is still trying to get cable providers and DishNetwork Satellite to carry it in their lineup. None of the Columbus cable providers have agreed to carry the channel. At this point people in Columbus will only get the channel on DirecTV Satellite. If you live outside of Columbus, check with your provider.
