Guest Panel-Bowl Games

The Guest Panel starts a new competition with the slate clean. Check back on December 18 for the picks/comments for all 34 bowl games.

spamsandwichsan says...

1. EagleBank Bowl
Wake Forest vs. Navy
W-Navy... again!

2. New Mexico
Colorado State vs. Fresno State
W-Fresno State

3. magicJack St. Petersburg
Memphis vs. South Florida
W-South Florida - if players are healthy, the defense should be able to shut memphis down

4. Pioneer Las Vegas
BYU vs. Arizona
W-BYU - after that nasty loss to Utah, they will totally redeem themselves! BYU must have some big gamblers on their team for vegas to choose them so many times in the last few years!

5. R+L Carriers New Orleans
Southern Miss vs. Troy
W-Southern Miss - cut the non-BCS stat's and reducing them to sub-par teams (yes, even I have been guilty of this in the past)... S. Miss ended regular season on fire, and they also seem to fare well as the underdog!

6. San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia
Boise State vs. TCU
W-TCU

7. Sheraton Hawaii
Hawaii vs. Notre Dame
W-Hawaii - Charlie will be too worried about paying for his shiney new knee's after he's fired and looses his ND health insurance!!

8. Motor City
Florida Atlantic vs. Central Michigan
W-Florida Atlantic - i have some friends that went to CMU, and there wasn't a whole lot of football going on... just a bunch of toppless women having pillow fights!

9. Meineke Car Care
West Virginia vs. North Carolina
W-NC - tar heels looking to upset another Big East, especially with such a let down year for Pat White (maybe he should have followed his old coach to that team up north)

10. Champs Sports
Wisconsin vs. Florida State
W-Wisonsin - I think they 'got their groove back' at the end of the regular season. Now what they do with that re-discovered mojo is up to them, as long as they don't Lydell Ross it up and try to spend fake stripper dollars at the club!

11. Emerald
Miami (Fla.) vs. California
W-Cal - turnover margin is huge and miami's defense is having some trouble

12. Independence
Northern Illinois vs. Louisiana Tech
W-Northern Illinois - I pick their defense to help eek them by

13. Papajohns.com
NC State vs. Rutgers
W-NC State - might be the highest scoring bowl game (browns-bengal's 2007 style).

14. Valero Alamo
Missouri vs. Northwestern
W-Northwestern - I want to see sutton make a nice come back. plus, missouri will have a tough time coming back after the big 12 title embarassment!

15. Roady's Humanitarian
Maryland vs. Nevada
W-Nevada - hopefully they can score more points than their defense gives up (sorry for the generic Madden-style comment)

16. Texas
Rice vs. Western Michigan
W-Rice - I made it to the 16th bowl game before ranting about the bowl names (not sure how I made it past the Humanitarian bowl). Seriously, the Texas bowl? If it wasn't the middle of December, I might mistake some of the listings for a shitty Nascar race.

17. Pacific Life Holiday
Oklahoma State vs. Oregon
W-Oregon - they've got the offensive edge

18. Bell Helicopter Armed Forces
Houston vs. Air Force
W-Air Force - gotta pick for my buds flying over the sandbox this holiday season!

19. Brut Sun
Oregon State vs. Pittsburgh
W-Pitt

20. Gaylord Hotels Music City
Boston College vs. Vanderbilt
W-BC - Merkle! Finally, a bowl game that was established in your honor!

21. Insight
Kansas vs. Minnesota
W-Kansas - Not to hate on the big ten, but Minnesota's bowl history is not stellar, and their offense is still struggling.

22. Chick-fil-A
LSU vs. Georgia Tech
W-GT - man, why couldn't have LSU sucked this bad last year?

23. Outback
South Carolina vs. Iowa
W-Iowa - I still hate the gamecocks after driving to tampa two years in a row for nothing!

24. Capital One
Georgia vs. Michigan State
W-State - I think Georgia is still somewhat over rated

25. Konica Minolta Gator
Clemson vs. Nebraska
W-Nebraska

26. Rose Bowl Game Presented by Citi
Penn State vs. USC
W-Penn State - to eliminate the possibility of another sideline injury, Joe Pa will be coaching live via satalite from his secure beach bungalow... which will be conveniently located next to the cabana bathroom in case of any emergencies...

27. FedEx Orange
Cincinnati vs. Virginia Tech
W-Cincy - silence the only-BCS-football-matters! of course, if they loose then the BCS will add a 'non-BCS-team' to their poll calculation which will keep this from happening in the future.

28. AT&T Cotton
Ole Miss vs. Texas Tech
W-Tech - What a way to end the season! Tech should have no problem winning this one, which will make most of the team think about what could have been...

29. AutoZone Liberty
Kentucky vs. East Carolina
W - Kentucky

30. Allstate Sugar
Utah vs. Alabama
W-Utah - just to show Saban that football is football.

31. International
Buffalo vs. Connecticut
W-Buffalo

32. Tostitos Fiesta
Ohio State vs. Texas
TIEBREAKER-LIST TOTAL NUMBER OF POINTS SCORED
W-OSU (48 total points) - man, OSU really needs to win this one or they may never get a good bowl game pick again! oh wait, football skills are not used to pick BCS games, it boils down to which team match up will bring in the most money! with that in mind, i'm suprised the BCS doesn't just put ND in a game against itself in order to raise money to buy out Charlie's contract!

33. GMAC
Tulsa vs. Ball State
W-Ball State

34. FedEx BCS National Championship Game
Florida vs. Oklahoma
W-Florida - tebow is mad and bradford will have the heisman hangover.

Nostrapigskinus Predicts (after finishing in a tie for 3rd place in the regular season standings, for shame!!!):

1. EagleBank Bowl
Navy def. Wake Forest: Playing in front of (pretty much) a home crowd, having their starting QB back from injury (with the second coolest name in major college football, Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada), finishing the season on a 5-2 roll, and having already beaten Wake Forest once this season, I'll go with the Mids.

2. New Mexico
Colorado State def. Fresno State: Fresno State just lost to Boise State 61-10. I'm not too sure how many people can pick a team that lost its final game of the regular season by that score, but, I'm sure some people will, just based on the total and utter complete coolness of Pat Hill's moustache.

3. magicJack St. Petersburg
South Florida def. Memphis: South Florida is playing the game 30 miles from their campus, and, they'll be a lot healthier than they have been recently come game time. But, most importantly, can someone tell who or what magicJack is?

4. Pioneer Las Vegas
BYU def. Arizona: Related to my comment about Mormons and New Orleans not really mixing well, the same can be applied in this game, just replace New Orleans with Las Vegas. But Arizona sucks, and Alabama doesn't. Go with the Cougars and the points.

5. R+L Carriers New Orleans
Troy def. Southern Miss: Really nothing to say here...not all of my commentary can always be chock full of humorous insights and/or strong, take it to the bank analysis. Sorry folks.

6. San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia
TCU def. Boise State: For diehard college football fans, this will probably be one of the better and more entertaining non-BCS bowl games of the entire bowl season. Expect many more San Diego County Credit Union customer accounts after the conclusion of this game.

7. Sheraton Hawaii
Hawaii def. Notre Dame: Notre Dame lost to Syracuse (my graduate school alma mater, by the way. Go 'CUSE!). In South Bend. On Senior Day. When they led in the 4th quarter. Need I say more?

8. Motor City
Central Michigan def. Florida Atlantic: When is the city of Detroit going to realize that college football teams, as a reward for a great season, really don't want to be "rewarded" with a late December game in the worst major city in America. I think the only reason any team accepts an invitation to this game is that each player and coach gets either a brand new Ford, GM, or Chrysler car in their bowl game schwag bag.

9. Meineke Car Care
West Virginia def. North Carolina: What do the players/coaches get in their schwag bag from this game, a coupon for a free oil change?!

10. Champs Sports
Florida State def. Wisconsin: Sorry Badgers, when you barely beat Cal Poly to finish your regular season, you're not getting Nostra's pick.

11. Emerald
California def. Miami (Fla.): Miami isn't back quite yet to the days of Dorsey, Portis, Sean Taylor, Ed Reed, Andre Johnson & Co. from the early part of the decade, but give them 2-3 years, and they'll be back up at the top of the ACC and the college football world.

12. Independence
Louisiana Tech def. Northern Illinois: Another bowl game that pretty much has a de facto home team. Really though Independence Bowl officials, this is the best match-up that you could come up with???

13. Papajohns.com
Rutgers def. NC State: Why isn't this just the Papa John's bowl? Did the company really feel the need to add the dot com part in there? Well, whatever the case, their schwag bag is a heckuva lot better than the Meineke Car Care Bowl one (free pizza vs. free oil changes...ummmmm yea, I'll go with the free pizza).

14. Valero Alamo
Missouri def. Northwestern: Whatever the over/under is for this game, take the over.

15. Roady's Humanitarian
Nevada def. Maryland: I know my relatives who are UMD alumni are going to be upset with me for this pick, but, there are no familial allegiances when it comes to the Guest Panel bowl game picks.

16. Texas
Rice def. Western Michigan: I really like the logos for both of these teams. On a side note, of all the bowl games that the NFL Network could have picked to broadcast, it chose this one?

17. Pacific Life Holiday
Oklahoma State def. Oregon: The Cowboys have been a bit more battle tested than the Ducks this season, having beaten Mizzou when they were a national title contender, and playing Oklahoma tough for at least a quarter or two. But, both teams are the absolute biggest losers in the entire country when it comes to uniforms. Whatever genius at Nike drew up the Ducks' uniforms, he/she should be immediately fired.

18. Bell Helicopter Armed Forces
Houston def. Air Force: Yea, sure, why not.

19. Brut Sun
Pittsburgh def. Oregon State: I know I said I wouldn't pick Pittsburgh for the rest of the season a few weeks ago, but, after the fightin' Beaves got destroyed by Oregon's running game, the smart money says that the Pittsburgh RB McCoy is going to run all over them.

20. Gaylord Hotels Music City
Boston College def. Vanderbilt: Battle of the Brainiacs. The slightly less brainy school wins in Nashville.

21. Insight
Kansas def. Minnesota: How does a team that finishes the season with 4 consecutive losses make a (relatively decent) bowl game?

22. Chick-fil-A
Georgia Tech def. LSU: Oh, how the mighty have fallen. The Tigers' failures this season can't all be blamed on Les Miles (hello, Ryan Perilloux), but, makes you wonder, if Lloyd Carr had retired this season instead of last season, would Michigan have been so quick to offer him (Miles) the head coaching job?

23. Outback
Iowa def. South Carolina: I'm not sure why people still jock Spurrier so much, seeing as he's been more or less a complete failure in two of his four head coaching stints (currently with SC, and with my beloved Washington Redskins). Should be a relatively easy win for the Hawkeyes.

24. Capital One
Georgia def. Michigan State: If Pryor/Wells can put up 42 against the Spartans D, I hate to see what Stafford/Moreno can do.

25. Konica Minolta Gator
Nebraska def. Clemson: This is a pretty big bowl game for two teams that were pretty mediocre for the first half of the season. How did Nebraska go to a New Year's Day bowl game while Mizzou was relegated to play in the Alamo Bowl?!

26. Rose Bowl
USC def. Penn State: Insert obligatory JoePa pooping his pants in the middle of the game joke here.

27. FedEx Orange
Cincinnati def. Virginia Tech: Yes, this is me picking against my beloved Hokies for the second straight time. I was wrong the first time, and I'll probably be wrong again.

28. AT&T Cotton
Texas Tech def. Ole Miss: I'll be the first to admit that Texas Tech (along with Boise State) got hosed out of BCS berths by Ohio State, but, the BCS Rules Gods have proclaimed it as such, so, that is what we all must live by. I'll definitely miss the Harrell to Crabtree connection; some NFL teams (are you listening, Detroit Lions?), would be well served to draft both players and hire Mike "Blackbeard Jr." Leach, and have them run their offense for the next decade.

29. AutoZone Liberty
East Carolina def. Kentucky: Does anyone remember that East Carolina beat my beloved Hokies AND West Virginia in the beginning of the season (not to mention Tulsa at the end of the season)? This Guest Panelist does. Take the Pirates and the points.

30. Allstate Sugar
Alabama def. Utah: Call me crazy, but methinks that Mormons and New Orleans don't mix too well.

31. International
Connecticut def. Buffalo: How is Buffalo rewarded for gaining its first ever trip to a bowl? By playing in Toronto in the dead of winter. Come on bowl committee officials, at least give them a trip to Orlando or Miami or somewhere at least above 60 degrees. Sheesh.

32. Tostitos Fiesta
Texas def. Ohio State (Final Score: Texas 31, Ohio State 20): For only the second time in my 4 year Guest Panelist career, I pick against Ohio State. As much as I love my Buckeyes and the Sweater Vest, let's be realistic, the Longhorns are superior in all aspects of the game, not to mention OSU's recent track record in "big games" is pretty poor (losses to UF, LSU, USC, and PSU). A friend of Nostra's (Miss Cleo) commented that if Tressel loses this game, there are going to start to be some questions raised in Columbus about Tressel's ability to coach in the big game. To be continued...

33. GMAC
Ball State def. Tulsa: I firmly believe that if Ball State had gone undefeated, it would have been Ball State vs. Utah in the national championship game. Now, for eonce, there's actually something to be proud of at Ball State other than being the alma mater of Letterman.

34. FedEx BCS National Championship Game
Florida def. Oklahoma: We saw what Florida's defense did to another supposedly unstoppable offense (OSU, circa 2006) in the 2007 national title game. Perhaps I'm putting too much stock in past results, but Bradford & Co. haven't faced a defense like Florida's in the Big 12 or anywhere else this season. Not to mention Stoops has a bit Tressel-big game-itis as well, having lost his last 4 BCS games. Close through 3 quarters, but Gators pull through in the 4th.

Pat Head's Picks:

1. Eagle Bank Bowl: Navy over Wake - Go Midshipmen!

2. New Mexico Bowl: Fresno State over Colorado State – I’m going w/ the majority.

3. Magicjack Bowl: South Florida over Memphis – home team advantage.

4. Pioneer Bowl: BYU over AZ – the Pac 10 is overrated.

5. R&L Carriers Bowl: Troy over SoMiss – I thought R&L was home based between Cinci and C-bus, they certainly have a nice conference center there.

6. San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl: TCU Horned Frogs over Boise State – this certainly has to win the longest bowl name award.

7. Sheraton Bowl: Hawaii over the Irish – I had ND picked, but then I remembered my edict.

8. Motor City Bowl: Central Michigan over Fl Atlantic. Finally, a bowl I have heard of before.

9. Meineke Car Care Bowl: UNC over WVU.

10. Champs Sports Bowl: Wisconsin over FSU – FSU probably won’t have a team left by the bowl game.

11. Emerald Bowl: Cal over Miami (FL)

12. Independence Bowl: La Tech over Northern Illinois – I forget why.

13. Papajohns.com Bowl: NC State over Rutgers – I’m taking a gamble.

14. Valero Alamo Bowl: Missouri over Northwestern.
