Guest Panel-Week 14 Games and Standings

Here are the games for the Guest Panel to consider this week. Below are the standings as well. Philly Cheese moved into a tie with Funtik for first, due to a 5-1 record. Mel Kiper jumped Batman for third place. SPAM had the biggest move, going from 8th to 4th. Both Big Dog and Bowl Ban had 5-1 records. None of the panelists correctly picked Arizona State over Arizona.

TIEBREAKER-Please list the total number of points scored for the Big Ten Championship Game (Nebraska vs. Wisconsin). In the event of a tie for first place, I will look to the tiebreaker and the panelist closest to the total number of points, above or below, will break the tie and win. I will only use the tiebreaker for first place.

This is the last week for the regular season competition. The Guest Panel will return with a clean slate for the bowl games

It's going to take a miracle, so I have resorted to picking every dog except Texas State.

When I lose at things (quite often) I always try to find out where things went wrong that contributed to the outcome.

With the case of this season, I underestimated Ohio State (costing me 3 games) and I did horrible picking odd ball contests (probably missing at least 7, including 4 in one week).

I also spent the entire off-season scouting the Michigan directional schools. I even went to their spring games and summer training camps in an attempt to get an edge on the fellow Buckeye Pregame panelists.

All of this effort was stymied when the Moderator chose this year (off all years) to select less than a handful of Michigan directional games.

Instead the Moderator went to the Pac 12 and schools from the former Big 12 (or does the Big 12 still exist) and the SEC.

So bottom line, I am blaming an over-achieving Buckeye squad and a Moderator who has fallen in love with the Power Conferences.

Of course.

OLD BAG OF MAN WOULD LIKE TO TAKE A BOWL BAN THIS YEAR...LIKE THE MIAMI HURRICANES.

1) NEBRASKA. IF NEBRASKA DOESN'T WIN THIS GAME AND WISCONSIN ENDS UP IN A BCS BIRTH WITH 5 LOSSES AND FAT BIELEMA AT THE HELM, I WILL DECLARE THE BIG 10 THE BIG EAST OF THE MIDWEST.

2) STANFORD. MIGHT BE TOUGH BEATING THE SAME TEAM TWO WEEKS IN A ROW.

3) ALABAMA. I HATE TO SEE ALABAMA WITH A CHANCE TO WIN A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP AGAIN BUT I HATE NOTRE DAME MORE.

4) KANSAS ST. KSU IS LOOKING TO MAKE AMENDS FOR THE BAD GAME AGAINST BAYLOR.

5) KENT ST. FORMER OSU COACHES ARE DOING WONDERS UP IN KENT.

6) TEXAS ST.

Spamsandwichsan says... what better way to spend the week after the *ichigan win than to have Urban run a high-profile recruiting trip to that state up North! Fat Brady Hoke and all other big-ten coaches should fear The Urban!

1. Nebraska over Wisconsin - martinez over miller for big ten all conference qb? what a crock!

2. Stanford over UCLA

3. Alabama over Georgia

4. Kansas St. over Texas

5. Northern Illinois over Kent St. - kent read, kent write, kent-win-the-mac-state, but it would be nice to see a MAC in a BCS game thanks to the demise of the big east! (sorry cincy... looks like your Super PAC style commercial/bid to join the ACC did not fill their coffers so you’re officially the dwarf among midgets)

6. Texas St. over New Mexico St.

Nebraska vs. Wisconsin: Ohio State
UCLA - They were sandbagging last week...
Georgia - 2012 National Champs
Kansas St. - No SI jinx this week (it got my OU Bobcats this season, too)
Northern Illinois - Kent read, Kent write, Kent beat the Huskies

Texas St. - New Mex St has cashed it in...Disgusting...

P.S. - re: Big Ten game--I will go with the team that actually won its division, Nebraska

Black Widow's Picks:
1. Wisconsin over Nebraska: It is always tough to beat a team 2x in one season. Nebraska has more to lose and will play tight.
2. Stanford over UCLA: weird repeat.
3. Alabama over Georgia: Bama's loss to A&M was a fluke. Unfortunately, the SEC East will lose the championship game...again.
4. Kansas St. over Texas: Texas, who?
5. Northern Illinois over Kent St.: Here come the BCS busters...
6. Texas St. over New Mexico State

Funtik the Hog

After having first place by myself for two straight weeks, Pat & Geno’s made a strong charge (courtesy of the wise and smart pick [as opposed to my foolhardy pick] of the SEC over the ACC; yes I forgot one of my Guest Panel cardinal rules that when in doubt, always pick the SEC over the ACC, duh!), to tie it up. Last week of the regular season for the Guest Panel, and it all comes down to P & G’s and the big bad hog. Pork vs. flank steak. Philadelphia vs. the Ukraine. Cow (and cheese, and onions, and bread) vs. pig. A clash of the titans. A battle for the ages. Guest Panel readers, choose your side, and let the battle begin.

Nebraska def. Wisconsin (total points = 49): Using the Hair’s favorite scientific theorem (the transitive property, narrowly beating out force = mass x acceleration), Ohio State beat Nebraska by about 560 points, and only beat Wisconsin by a single TD in OT. Therefore, Wisconsin should beat Nebraska by at least a TD or two. However, dear Guest Panel readers, just because it’s science, doesn’t mean it’s fact. Take the ‘Huskers in this game, and I dare say, take the points as well.

Stanford def. UCLA: Although these two teams played 6 days before this game and Stanford destroyed the Bruins, this game will obviously be a lot closer (UCLA had nothing to play for other than an opportunity to play Oregon in this game rather than Stanford; gee, would you rather die by firing squad or the electric chair?). However, the Cardinal pulled off (arguably) one of the three most impressive victories of the entire college football season, and there’s something to be said for that. Plus, Stanford’s starting QB is from Funtik’s hometown (which is not Kiev, surprisingly), so he kind of has to cheer for the Cardinal a bit.

Alabama def. Georgia: On paper and on results, one could easily pick Georgia in this game. Their QB Murray is the top rated QB in the country, and their defense has at least 2 or 3 2013 NFL 1st round draft picks. Although Alabama has certainly come back to the pack a bit in recent weeks (barely escaping LSU, losing to Texas A&M), Nick Saban is arguably the best big game coach in the entire country.

Kansas State def. Texas: I was hoping the Moderator wouldn’t choose this game for the Guest Panel to pick. Games involving Texas have been the bane of Funtik’s existence this season; pretty sure I have a winless record in games involving the Longhorns. In my defense though, the previous games were, at least, somewhat more in doubt. The Wildcats are a mulligan (admittedly, a pretty big mulligan) away from the national title game and a Heisman Trophy-winning QB. Texas can’t seem to get out of its own way in most of its games this season. I am going to give a big middle finger to Texas, Mack Brown, and Manny Diaz and make this game Funtik the Hog’s “Clairvoyant Snout Bucket Rummage” Pick of the Week for Week #14 (7-5 season record in such games, a better record than last week, I suppose).

Northern Illinois def. Kent State: If NIU QB Jordan Lynch played in a BCS conference, he’d be right in there with Johnny Football Heismanziel (and feel free to throw in whatever other nickname you care to) in the Heisman Trophy discussion. Alas, he doesn’t, so, we have this game. It’ll probably be the most entertaining game of the entire weekend, so prepare yourself for some great #MACtion!!!

Texas State def. New Mexico State: For what it’s worth (and I don’t think it’s a lot), NMSU has one of the cooler, bad a** logos in all of college football. Definitely check it out! As for the game itself, TX State is favored by nearly 2 TDs; apparently Las Vegas knows something that no one else does. Go with the Bobcats, but maybe not with the points. When two terrible teams are playing, expect a close, sloppy, poorly played game with a lot of penalties and turnovers.
