OSU Last Week

OSU had some big plays Saturday, but the effort was just enough to get the team into overtime and come away with the loss 26-23. Like the Indiana game in the previous week, Ohio State gave up early points and was unable to score early in the game, resulting in a 10-0 lead by the opponent in both games. The Buckeye offense scored its first points a few minutes into the second quarter to put the game at 10-7, but Purdue had a touchdown run near the end of the half and went into halftime with a 17-7 lead. Drew Basil missed a 50 yard FG attempt at the end of the first half. Miller had an impressive looking 6 yard run into the endzone in the third quarter to put Ohio State within 3 points. Purdue added three points to its lead early in the fourth quarter with a 44-yard FG. Both teams exchanged the ball as the defenses locked in, but Ohio State had one final possession that required some heroics by Braxton Miller to keep the drive going. Braxton Miller scrambled on 4th and 3, jumped over an Ohio State player, and found Jordan Hall open for a touchdown to tie the game. Unfortunately the PAT was blocked, leaving 55 seconds on the clock for Purdue. Ohio State elected to kick it on the ground, and Purdue had favorable field position. Purdue was almost in field goal range when second string quarterback Ralph Marve made his only major mistake for the day by throwing an interception to Orhian Johnson. Ohio State ran out the clock and had first possession in overtime. Ohio State had to settle for a field goal after a pass fell short on third down. Purdue moved the ball with ease and with the ball on the one yard line Marve emptied the backfield, spreading out the Ohio State defenders, and he ran the ball in for the go-ahead touchdown in overtime.
